Anglesey Foodbank Monthly Update
May 2025: End of Month Round-Up
A Message from the Team
May brought with it two bank holidays, a school half term, and the kind of weather that makes everything feel a little more possible. But for many on Anglesey, the month also brought fresh challenges — stretched budgets, rising costs, and tough choices.
At Banc Bwyd Ynys Môn, we continue to see the effects of financial hardship on our island. We’re not just here to hand out food; we’re here to offer hope and support during difficult times. If you, or someone you know, is cutting back on essentials just to get by, please don’t wait. Help is available now.
If you’re struggling, please know this:
An emergency food parcel is a hand up, not a hand out. In May alone, we made 10 referrals to Citizens Advice for service users needing urgent support with energy bills and benefit claims. Don’t wait until things get worse. Read here how you can get help now.
May Highlights
- Our website has a new look!
You may have noticed but we recently updated our Trussell site with clearer text, refreshed graphics, and an easier-to-navigate layout. - Food Parcels Delivered
In May, we fulfilled 167 food voucher referrals, supporting 303 people across the island, including 96 children. - New Users
We registered 18 households who accessed our Foodbank for the first time this month. - Rising Need
A staggering 81% of our service users in May relied solely on benefits to meet all their basic needs.
More Than Just Parcels
Thanks to generous surplus donations, we were also able to provide fresh fruit and vegetables to:
- Local schools: 257.2 kg for snacks and food clubs
- The Refuge: 31.2 kg
- Community groups: 297.1 kg, including warm meals and snacks for users
Volunteer & Community Shout-Out
As Volunteer Week wraps up, we want to extend our heartfelt diolch yn fawr iawn to:
- Everyone on Anglesey who donates food and funds to support our work
- Lidl Holyhead for their ongoing support with fresh produce
- And most of all, to our small but mighty volunteer team who answer calls, pack parcels, and travel across the island to deliver help where it’s needed most – thank you for all that you do.
Understanding Destitution
More and more, we hear people talk about “destitution”. But what does that mean?
“People are considered destitute if they have not been able to meet their barest physical needs to stay warm, dry, clean and fed. They can also be considered destitute if their income is so extremely low that they are unable to afford to meet these needs themselves rather than rely on charitable provision.”
– Joseph Rowntree Foundation
